It was hard to see as is in the dark, and the pouring down rain didn’t help either. April ran as fast as she could through the woods, dodging trees left and right along with jumping over bushes and scraping her knees to duck under stray branches that threatened to claw at her face.

Instructions were simple: split up and meet at the small shack in the heart of the woods. It wasn’t safe to go home back to the country home just yet, not with who knows what out there.

They had taken down new creatures mutated from muck and grime and in the rain they resembled what could have been human with melting flesh. After what they could fight, they all split; Leo one way, Raph and Casey the other, Mikey, then her and Donnie.

Along the way he had fallen behind, but he told her to keep going. Not taking the time to stop, adrenaline pumping through her veins; she did what she promised him she would: she ran.

Up ahead the shack came into view and once April was close enough, she ripped the door open and tumbled in. She fell into Leo’s arms and he righted her up. She looked around at them, all soaked and tired with a hint of fear in their eyes. But there was one pair of eyes missing.

“Where’s Donnie?” Her voice came out as a stutter and she hadn’t realized just how cold she was.

“He’s not with you?” Raph’s eyes widened and for a moment April thought she felt her heart stop.

“He was right behind me, he should be here. Just wait...”

Seconds ticked by, then minutes, and long after: hours. The rain only came down harder and darkness continued to loom overhead. They all bundled together, cold and frightened. They had each tried to call him, and April sent him two messages: where are you?

But no response. Eventually his phone went straight to voicemail, and dawn would be breaking over the horizon. They all believed he would come back, it was Donnie. He wouldn’t be taken down so easily, he was a ninja, despite being one of the weakest on the team.

The others had fallen asleep but April continued to watch the door, waiting. Her heart beat loudly in her chest, and with every noise she heard outside she hoped it was a sign that her mutant had come home. But it never was.
